McNair Scholars Program (MSP)
McNair Scholars Program prepares participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. Participants are from disadvantaged backgrounds and have demonstrated backgrounds and have demonstrated strong academic potential. Institutions work closely with participants as they complete their undergraduate requirements. Institutions encourage participants to enroll in graduate programs and then track their progress through to the successful completion of advanced degrees. The goal is to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees by students from underrepresented segments of society.
Other information & requirements:
- Students who qualify must be enrolled in a degree-granting program at an eligible institution. Two-thirds must be low-income, potential first generation college students.
- EKU is the only McNair project in the Commonwealth (185 McNair projects in the nation). Organizationally, it is structured in the Academic Affairs under Graduate Education ad Research at EKU.
- The project receives $225,000 each year from the US Department of Education to serve 25 eligible students.
- Since October 2003, 65 students have participated in the project. 53 of them have entered into graduate programs or are preparing to enter graduate school. Nearly half of the students served are from groups underrepresented in graduate education.
